cancer drugs - Lee F

Picture for Lee F „it gave even explosion of our understanding of cancer since human genome," said Dr. Lee F. Allen, vice president of oncology clinical research at Wyeth, which currently sales, two, cancer drugs . Two and a half years ago, Wyeth created a center of excellence to research cancer, placing everyone working on the disease in Cambridge, Mass. This allowed the group to streamline its approach and work with the academic community in the area. It currently cancer drugs the 13 in the clinical development, trebles amount from three years ago. When GlaxoSmithKline was formed through a merger in 2000, the company had two has cancer drugs . Now, with a new focus and additional spending, the company is developing eight drugs for cancer treatment, plus three for the treatment of side effects, one vaccine and three therapeutic vaccines.

After the axillary (armpit) lymph nodes, bone is the most common place to which breast cancer can spread. Aredia (generic name, pamidronate disodium) is a medication that is used to reduce bone complications and bone pain in patients whose breast cancer has spread to the bone. Clinical studies have shown that patients who are given Aredia tend to experience a delay in or reduction of bone pain, fractures, and other bone complications than patients who do not receive Aredia. Aredia is usually administered by intravenous injection along with the patient's other cancer therapies, such as chemotherapy.

Picture for For a less severe disease or condition, the commercial clinical studies for cancer drugs are not to those for drugs used to treat illnesses that are less serious. For a less severe disease or condition, the commercial sponsor may show that the drug works better than an inactive substance (placebo), but generally does not have to show that it works as well or better than other drugs on the market to treat the same illness. studies a little varying, which normally include cancer drugs with, apply placebos , says Patricia Cortazar, M.D., an oncologist in the FDA's Office of Oncology Drug Products. Because cancer is a life-threatening illness, it would not be ethical to give placebo when something better than placebo is available. In cancer trials, a new drug is usually compared to a drug or a combination of drugs that are commonly accepted and widely used to treat the same type of cancer, known as the standard of care, or standard treatment.

Picture for As is the case with any drug, there is as judy orem said, drugs don't just pop off the shelves. As is the case with any drug, there is a long process before a drug reaches the stage where STI 571 has arrived. In the case of STI 571, the research effort at began at Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis) in the early 1990s. Finding a compound that works in research models is the first stage in identifying a candidate drug. The next stage, which is referred to as pre-clinical development, involves a team of individuals who perform the work required prior to human clinical testing. This time consuming phase involved a dedicated team of development scientists who studied the synthesis, toxicology, metabolism, formulation and production of the final drug. In the case of STI 571, there are several scientists who deserve particular mention. These include: Juerg Zimmermann, the chemist who synthesized STI 571, Elizabeth Buchdunger, a scientist at Novartis who did much of the original cellular profiling of STI 571 and related compounds and Helmut Mett, who was responsible for enzymology. Peter Graff, Ulrika Pfaar and Hans Michael Buerger also deserve special mention for their contribution to the success of the pre-clinical development phase of STI 571. In addition to these scientists, this project could not have progressed without the continual support of Alex Matter, who is the director of the Oncology Research unit at Novartis that discovered STI 571. Lastly, and most importantly, is Nicholas Lydon. Nick was the person in charge of the kinase inhibitor program from which STI 571 was created and Nick was the person who sent me a number of Abl kinase inhibitors, including STI 571, to test in the lab.
